Zanzibar Archipelago regroup numerous small islands located in the Western Indian Ocean, 25 kilometers off the coast of Tanzania. Our NGO is located in Matemwe, on the island of Unguja which is the largest and most populated island of the archipelago.
One of the jewels of Zanzibar is Mnemba Island located in the North-East of Unguja. It is surrounded by fifteen kilometers of some of the most beautiful coral reefs of Zanzibar. In 2005, the Mnemba Island Marine Conservation Area (MIMCA) was established in collaboration with the Zanzibar Department of Fisheries and local fishermen. It is a protected area with specific sites for tourism activities and fishing since it is the main fishing grounds for all the villagers of the North-East of Unguja.
